Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Oldham Co. WILLIAM A. McMAKIN, a native of Nelson County, was born October 8, 1816, a son of Charles McMakin, a native of Virginia, who came to Kentucky in an early day with his parents, and settled in Nelson County, but subsequently moved to Shelby and Oldham Counties. He died at Lexington, Ind. He married Elizabeth Duncan, a native of South Carolina, and daughter of William Duncan, a native of the same State. Four sons and three daughters were born to their union, and of this family our subject is the eldest. His grandfather, William McMakin, was a native of Virginia, came to Kentucky in 1802, and settled in Nelson County, where he lived the greater part of his life, and died in Louisville in 1849. Our subject has devoted his life to farming pursuits, and now has a farm of 260 acres of well cultivated land in LaGrange Precinct. He married, in 1843, Enreth E. Ellis, a native of Shelby County, and daughter of Stephen Ellis. One son and one daughter blessed their union: Henry and Julia, (the latter deceased). Mr. McMakin died about 1847, a member of the Baptist Church of many years standing. Mr. McMakin's second marriage occurred in 1852 with Sarah M. Oglesby, a native of Oldham County, and a daughter of Ellis and Jane (Yager) Oglesby, and the following named children were born to them: Florence, RIchard and Monchie (last two deceased). Politically Mr. McMakin is a Democrat. He is a member of the Baptist Church, and his wife of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
