Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Oldham Co. J. M. HOLMES is a native of Madison, Ind., was born April 30, 1849, and is a son of Edward H. and Levina (Reynolds) Holmes, born respectively in Lincoln County, Ky., and the State of Ohio. He was educated in the high school of Madison, afterward served an apprenticeship of four years at carriage-making, then carried on business on his own account at Madison, and in 1871 came to LaGrange, Ky., and opened the first carriage manufactory ever in the town. He is doing a thriving business in the building of barouches, phaetons, buck wagons, sulkies, etc., and in addition deals in hardware and farming implements. In September, 1872, he married Miss Laura N. Maddox, a native of LaGrange and a daughter of Abram and Jane (Wright) Maddox, natives of Oldham County, Ky., and Mercer County. Two children have been born to this marriage: Ella and Edward. Mr. Holmes is a Knight of Honor, and a deacon and trustee of the Baptist Church. He owns four acres adjacent to the town of LaGrange, is a thorough business man, and has built up a good business without outside assistance.
