LEROY ELLIS is the youngest of the seven sons born to Joshua and Catherine (Powers) Ellis, the former a native of Virginia, and the latter of Oldham County, Ky. The father of Mrs. Ellis was a very early settler near the line of Shelby and Oldham Counties, and died in 1860, at about the age of eighty-three years. Leroy Ellis was born in Oldham County, Ky., August 7, 1824, was reared and educated in the county, and for a while resided in Missouri. March 7, 1848, he married Miss Rachel Roney, daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Blades) Roney, natives of Pennsylvania, and of the eight children born to this union Henry T., Sarah C., John E., Arthur Q. and Walter P. are living, and Joseph W., Anna E. and Carlos B. are deceased. Mr. Ellis owns a farm of 600 acres in Oldham County, on which he resides, and which is in a good state of cultivation. In 1851-52 he also conducted a store in connection with farming. During the late war Mr. Ellis was a decided Union man, and furnished a substitute for the Federal Army. He is a Democrat in politics, and in religion a Baptist, belonging to the Ballardsville Church.
