WILLIAM COMPTON was born March 27, 1807, in the town of Beer Regis, England, and when quite young, in 1829, came with his father, John, to Baltimore, Md. In 1833 he came to Kentucky, was married the same year to Catherine Christopher, of Baltimore, located in Louisville, and engaged in the mercantile and brokerage business for twelve years, when he removed to a farm of 206 acres in Oldham County, one mile and a half north of Pewee Valley, where he died in 1857, leaving seven children, viz: Mary, William (deceased), Julia, Henry, Amelia, Thomas and Ticlah. Thomas, who was born in 1848, sold goods with his brother William at Beard's for eight years, and also acted as depot agent. William died on July 12, 1881.
