Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Oldham Co. JAMES H. BUTTON was born in Oldham County, Ky., October 26, 1819, a son of John and Frances Y. (Hitt) Button, natives of Virginia. John Button was of German descent, came from Virginia at an early day, and settled between Westport and LaGrange, Oldham County. He served in the war of 1812, under Gen. Harrison, and was one of the minute men stationed along the Ohio River. His death occurred in April, 1835. James H. Button was reared to farming, and also learned tanning under a brother in Oldham. For twenty years he carried on tanning at LaGrange, when the war broke up his business; he was also in the mercantile business two years, magistrate at LaGrange eight years, and is now the county commissioner of the poor. In 1867 he moved to Buckner's Station, where he owns a farm of 187 1/2 acres, and is engaged in its cultivation. December 13, 1839, he married Martha P. Curd, daughter of Woodford Curd. She died in January, 1854, leaving one son, Woodford Button, now a miller at LaGrange. July 4, 1854, Mr. Button married Miss Jennie Barrickman, daughter of Jonathan Barrickman. This lady died January 15, 1858; her one child, also died. He next married Eliza J. Moreland, who has borne him six children: Paul F., Robert W., Josie E., Pearle, Thomas L. and Ernest.
