By permission of author. Ohio County JOHN HARRISON FLENER grew up on a farm and followed that occupation through life. On July 19, 1908, he was united in marriage to MISS MINNIE B. RANNEY, the daughters of Seth P. Ranney and a native of Illinois, but he was a native of Butler County. They were married on an Ohio County License on July 19, 1908. The wedding took place at the home of and the ceremony was performed by former Pastor James Pendleton Taylor, the writer's grandfather. The witnesses were: Luther Lyles, Irene Taylor, Chester Wilson and Cora Burgess. He was born on May 13, 1884 and died on March 11th, 1962, in his seventy-seventh year; while she was born December 27, 1889 and died on December 17, 1972, in her eighty-second year. Both are buried in the Green River Cemetery. They became the parents of four children, two daughters and two sons, as follows: Lois (Flener) West (b. February 2, 1909 - d. November 8, 1973); Jennie Mary (Flener) Kittinger (b.c. 1911); Boyce Franklin Flener (See latter Sketch); and Royce Ranney Flener (b. September 23, 1927 - d. August 19, 1971. Both sons eventually became Deacons of Green River Church. Brother Flener became a member of the Green River Church by Christian Experience and Baptism in September, 1899, being baptized by pastor D. J. K. Maddox. He became a Deacon by Church action on August 4, 1920, being ordained along with another, Thomas Monroe Goodman, at the same time. He served in the office nearly forty-two years. He represented the Church at the Association in 1920-1921, 1929, 1936, 1938, 1942, 1944-1945. He also served on several important committees of the Church and was one of its most influential members. Mrs. John Harrison Flener united with the Green River Church by Christian Experience and Baptism in November, 1909, being baptized by Pastor A. B. Gardner. She had been a member over sixty-three years at her death. His funeral service was conducted by Pastor Wesley Hanson (Hartford), assisted by former Pastor and present Pastor Dale Brauns and Alton W. Crowe (Green River), respectively. His widow and children survived him.
