A Sesquicentennial History of the Green River Missionary Baptist Church 1836 - 1986, Written and Compiled by Wendell Holmes Rone, Sr., For the One Hundred and Fiftieth Anniversary of the Founding of the Church, 1987. By permission of author. Ohio County BOYCE FRANKLIN FLENER was born in Ohio County, Kentucky, on September 9, 1913; and was the son of John Harrison Flener (1884-1962) and Minnie B. (Ranney) Flener (1889-1972). He was their third child and oldest son. He attended the schools at hand and followed the occupations of farming and coal mining, spending twenty-five years of his life as a miner before retiring. Twenty-three years of that time were spent with the Riverview Mines. On September 17, 1932, he was united in marriage to MISS ERNA MAE ALLEN on an Ohio County Marriage License. They became the parents of one son, Billy R. Flener (b. September 24, 1933), who was baptized into the fellowship of the Green River Church on August 13, 1945. He served as a Deacon of the Church in 1964-1979. Brother Boyce F. Flener was inducted into the Church fellowship by Christian Experience and Believer's Immersion on September 24, 1939, at the same time with his brother, Royce Ranney Flener and two others - Clarence and Cora Flener. Brother Boyce F. Flener served the Church as a Deacon from his ordination on April 23, 1961, until his death on November 30, 1976, over fifteen and one-half years. He also served as the Assistant Moderator of the Church; as Song Leader from 1956 to 1966, and probably earlier; and as a Messenger to the Association in 1940-1944, 1955, 1961, 1966, 1971-1972 and 1975, the year prior to his death. He served on many Church Committees, especially the Pulpit and Building Committees, during a membership period of over thirty-seven years. Mrs. Boyce F. (Erna) Flener (b. August 20, 1911) became a member of the Green River fellowship by Christian Experience and Believer's Immersion on December 19, 1954, being baptized by Pastor Hayward R. Casey. She has been both the wife and mother of two Deacons - her husband and son - of Green River Church. She has also served as Assistant and as Clerk of the Church, as well as a Choir Member. She has attended the Association as a Messenger in the years 1962, 1965, 1969-1970, 1972-1984, 1986-1987 - a total of nineteen times.
