A Sesquicentennial History of the Green River Missionary Baptist Church 1836 - 1986, Written and Compiled by Wendell Holmes Rone, Sr., For the One Hundred and Fiftieth Anniversary of the Founding of the Church, 1987. By permission of author. Ohio County BEDFORD FRANKLIN FLENER (1844-1924), the father of John Harrison Flener, was born in Butler County, Kentucky, the fifth child and second son of William Harrison Flener and Mary Ann (Snodgrass) Flener. There he grew to manhood, and on October 24, 1865, was united in marriage to MISS VIRGINIA C. MARTIN at the residence of William Martin in the presence of P. H. Hill, W. B. Neel, Milburn Neel and T. S. Wilson. Joe W. Adkins signed the Bill of Consent which accompanied the Butler County Marriage License, secured on October 18, 1865. She was probably a native of Butler County, also. They became the parents of at least five children, as follows: James C. Flener (b. August, 1878); William Martin Flener (b. June, 1881); JOHN HARRISON FLENER (b. May 13, 1884) and his twin Harriett Flener (b. May 11, 1884) and Mollie G. Flener (b. February, 1892). There were probably others, but we are short on records. Green River Church Records show that only B. F. Flener, William Martin Flener and John Harrison Flener of the above family became members of the Church. William Martin Flener was elected as a Deacon of the Church on March 27, 1909, and ordained on the following April 23rd. He was lettered out in 1913.
