"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone. Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, pp. 447-448. Used by permission. [Ohio] DEACON ELISHA H. COLEMAN: This outstanding Christian and Deacon was the father of Dr. J. S. Coleman, outstanding Baptist leader of the State of Kentucky and particularly of the Green River country in the last half of the Nineteenth Century. He was born on the Beaver Dam Fork of Muddy Creek, where the town of Beaver Dam now stands, on January 5, 1805. He departed this life on August 7, 1893, in his eighty-eighth year. He was the eldest son of Henry Coleman, the youngest son of Martin Coleman, who emigrated from Germany to America about the year 1759, which was about seventeen years before Independence was declared. The first home that Martin Coleman found was in the fortification called "Barrett's Fort," near where the town of Hartford now stands. Here Henry Coleman, who was the father of E. H. Coleman was born and remained with his parents until he was three years old, when the savages which then infested the country, were driven out. The elder Coleman then settled on a small tributary of Muddy Creek to which he gave the name of "Beaver Dam," for the reason that the beavers, which were then numerous, built large dams across this stream. Here Henry Coleman, father of E. H. Coleman was reared from three years old up, and continued to be a citizen of the same spot until his death in 1850 at the age of seventy-six years. In his early manhood he married Delilah Hocker and became the father of twenty-three children, Elisha H. being the eldest son, who also being born there continued to reside upon the same original tract of land until a few years before his death. At the age of twenty-two Mr. Coleman married Miss Susannah H. Maddox. In the year 1827 she became the mother of Rev. James Smith Coleman, D.D. Mr. Coleman enjoyed but few, and they the most imperfect, facilities for an education, but by close application and study he attained those qualities which enabled him to discharge the duties of a plain business man. He served in many local offices of responsibility always evincing the most sterling integrity and accuracy in his transactions. In February, 1838, he united with the Pond Run Baptist Church and was baptized by Elder Alfred Taylor, whose praise at that time was in all the Churches of that section. In June, 1838, he united by letter with the Beaver Dam Baptist Church and continued to hold his membership there until his death. He was both an active and faithful member of his Church and supported liberally her every work. He was ordained to the deaconship in 1846, in which office he served the Church in great faithfulness during all the days of his activity. After an illness of one week he finally departed this life to enjoy the endless life promised by the Lord to those that love Him. Elisha H. Coleman was a faithful attendant of the annual sessions of the Gasper River and Daviess County Associations for over fifty years. He was a sound and true Baptist yet as humble as a child and courteous to all who differed with him.
