GILLESPIE, farmer, P. O. Carlisle, was born in Montgomery County, Ky., Nov. 2, 1833, to Calvin and Cythia (Hedges) Gillespie; he was born in Madison County, Ky., Dec. 25, 1809; is a farmer by occupation, and still living; his wife, Cythia, was born in Bourbon County and died in April 1840; to them were born nine children, of whom, William, our subject, was the second. He was educated in the common schools of Montgomery County, and when twenty-one years of age entered upon the duties of a farm life. He was married in Nicholas County, Oct. 26, 1854, to Miss Lucretia Boardman, who was born in Nicholas County, Sept. 29, 1833, and died July 23, 1861, leaving to his care two children, viz: Jane and Nancy; Mrs. Gillespie was a daughter of Abner and Mary (Cross) Boardman; he was born in Bourbon County, April 16, 1801, and died Aug. 29, 1875; his wife, Mary, was also born in Bourbon County, Jan. 3, 1806, and died Jan. 30, 1878. Mr. Gillespie was married again in Nicholas County, Jan. 15, 1863, to Miss Harriet Sparks, who was born in Nicholas County, June 17, 1831; they have three children, viz: Robert L., Joseph and Elizabeth; the present Mrs. Gillespie was a daughter of William and Catharine (Knox) Sparks, both natives of Nicholas County; the former was born July 30, 1793 and died March 20, 1864; his wife was born Dec. 3, 1797, and died Jan. 11, 1845. Mr. Gillespie commenced life a poor man, but owing to his natural business tact and persistent energy, has become a successful farmer, and now owns a farm containing 275 acres, which, "being a practical farmer," he keeps under a high state of cultivation and well stocked. He is a man well worthy of the high esteem in which he is held by the community. In connection with his wife, he is a member of the Christian church at East Union. He is also a prominent member of the Masonic order at Carlisle. In politics he is a Democrat.
