Kentucky: A History of the State, Perrin, Battle, Kniffin, 4th ed., 1887, Nelson County. JOHN FENTON was born July 17, 1819, in New York City, where he was reared. In 1840 he removed to Louisville, Ky., engaging in boot and shoemaking, and in 1844 located in Nelson County, where he engaged in merchandising, and as toll-gate keeper on the L. & B. pike. In 1859 he removed to Bates County, Mo., where he engaged in farming, and where he now owns 225 acres of well improved and productive land. In 1861 he enlisted in the Sixth Kentucky Federal Cavalry, and served as quartermaster sergeant for nearly one year, when he was discharged on account of his eyesight. His father, John Fenton Sr., a native of New York City, was a soldier in the war of 1812, and died in 1834, aged fifty-five years. He was the son of Peter Fenton, a native of Scotland and a Revolutionary soldier. His children were David, Robert, John (who served with their father in the Revolution), Frederick, Peter, Andrew and George. All seven sons served with their father in the war of 1812. John Sr., married Lucretia Truce of Albany, N. Y., and their offspring are Mary A. (Ringgold), David (a soldier in the Mexican war), John, Abigail (Smith), Robert and Lucretia (married to William Bishop, who was killed in the late war). John Fenton has been thrice married; first, March 1, 1840, in Philadelphia, to Miss Mary A., daughter of John Hulfish, of Philadelphia (born in 1810, died in 1846), and to them were born David R., who served four years in the Federal Army, and Emma F. (Deacon). In 1846 Mr. Fenton moved to Louisville and shortly after to Nelson County, where he engaged in merchandising. His second marriage was in 1848 to Miss Paremlia Ball, of Nelson County (died in 1856), and their children are John, James and Robert. Mr. Fenton's third marriage was February 2, 1858, to Miss Mary J., daughter of Griffin and Lutitia (Montgomery) Crumes, of Nelson County (born July 2, 1829), and to their union were born Philip C., Charles F. and George W. Mr. Fenton has been a Mason and an Odd Fellow, and in politics he is a Republican. Mrs. Emma F. Deacon was born October 21, 1847, and on her twenty-first birthday was married to Nathaniel W. Deacon, of Nelson County (born January 23, 1842, died February 16, 1882), and to them were born Minnie and Orvil Woods.
