Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Monroe County. BENNETT SPEAR was born February 1, 1820, in Surry County, N. C.; in 1822 removed with his parents to Monroe County, Ky.; in 1829, to Jackson County, Tenn., and in 1844 returned to Monroe County, where he has since resided. His father, Levi Spear, Jr., was born in Surry County, and died in 1863, at the age of sixty-six years. He was the son of Shadrack Spear, of North Carolina, who died in Monroe County in 1856, aged eighty years. His father was Levi Spear, Sr., of North Carolina, who settled in Monroe County about 1800, where he died about 1825, aged ninety years. Levi Spear, Jr., married ELizabeth, daughter of Benjamin and Charity (Skidmore) Pettitt, of North Carolina (deceased in 1863), and their offspring are Bennett, Levi, Samuel, John C., Zachariah, George W., Austin, Mary (Tade), Burnette (Casteel), and Catherine (Smith). Bennett Spear has been twice married; first, February 15, 1846, to Adeline, daughter of Levi and Martha (Bailey) Kendrick, of Monroe County (born in 1819, died September 28, 1864), and from this union sprang Isaac J. B., Coatny A. (Thompson), Zachariah H. (deceased), Elizabeth S. (Spear), Levi, William M., and Lorenzo D. He next married, October 8, 1865, Marinda, daughter of George and Ruth (Springer) Harlan, of Monroe County (born May 24, 1846), and to them have been born George S., Joseph E. B., Rosa L., Lucy O., Alexander E. (deceased), Luther H., Letitia C. and Hubert K. In 1861-62 Mr. Spear served as deputy sheriff of Monroe County, and in 1862 was elected sheriff and served through the stormy period of the war. Many attempts were made to rob him of the public revenues, by guerrillas, during his term of office, all of which were successfully baffled, and being a strong Union man he was often pursued, sometimes captured, and at one time was in concealment two months. He is a farmer, owning 300 acres of productive and well improved land in a fine state of cultivation. He is a member of the Christian Church, and in politics is a stanch Republican.
