WILLIAM T. PROFFITT was born August 6, 1841, near Tompkinsville, Ky., 
and is the sixth of seven boys and two girls (eight of whom lived to be 
grown), born to George W. and Margaret (Wheelock) Proffitt. George W., a 
farmer, was born in Washington County, Tenn.  After his marriage he moved 
to Monroe County, Ky., was a true Union man, and enlisted in Company G, 
Ninth Kentucky Infantry, in the fall of 1861.  After a year's service he 
was discharged on account of disability.  He was a son of Jerry 
Proffitt, who came to Monroe County in 1838.  Mrs. Margaret Proffitt was 
born in Washington County, Tenn., a daughter of John Wheelock, who 
married Miss Kinchelo. William T. was reared on a farm.  He remained with 
his parents until he arrived at maturity, when he engaged in the milling 
and wool carding business.  In September, 1861, he enlisted in Company 
G, Ninth Kentucky Regiment; was in all the engagements with the 
regiment; was always ready for duty; was discharged December, 1864, at 
Louisville, Ky.; returned home, but on account of weak eyes, occasioned 
by exposure while in service of his country, was unable to do anything 
for seven or eight years. In 1868 he located on the banks of Barren 
River, in Gum Precinct, Monroe County, where he owns 100 acres of good 
land, fifty of which are under cultivation; also owns a good grist and 
saw-mill, also a carding-mill, which is run by the water from a single 
spring in one of the most romantic and picturesque places on Barren 
River; also owns 100 acres of fine timbered land in the south part of 
Monroe County.  Mr. Proffitt is industrious and economical.  He started 
in life with a horse and saddle, given him by his father when he went to 
the war; his property has been acquired by his industry.  He married, 
December 13, 1871, Mary E. Shaw, of Monroe County, a daughter of John 
and Stacy (Francis) Shaw. To this marriage have been born two children, 
one living - John Thomas Barton Proffitt.  Mr. Proffitt and wife are 
members of the Baptist Church.  In politics he is a Republican; cast his 
first presidential vote for A. Lincoln.  He is a pensioner.
