Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Monroe County. GEORGE A. HAGAN was born March 22, 1849, in Fountain Run; was reared on the farm; received a common English education, and at the age of eighteen left home and hired out at $10 per month until he reached the age of twenty-three, when he had accumulated enough means to enable him to attend school. He attended different academies for six sessions, after which he commenced teaching, which he has since followed with success. He has the reputation of being one of the most popular teachers in the county. Mr. Hagan has met with success and has acquired by his own efforts a fine property, worth about $2,000. He taught during the first five years ten public schools of five months each, and drew more public money than any public school teacher for the same length of time. He has taught in Simpson, Allen, Monroe and Barren Counties and has always received a first-class license, and has never failed in securing the school applied for, which is an excellent indication of his popularity as a teacher. He has always lived with his mother, who is now under his care. In politics is a Democrat; cast his first vote for S. J. Tilden. He has been repeatedly urged to accept office, but has always refused.
