BATDORF was born in Lebanon County, Penn., November 21, 1832, and is the only child of Thomas and Elizabeth (Wolf) Batdorf, who were born and reared in Pennsylvania. Thomas W. was but eight years old at his mother's death; was then reared by his grandfather, Wolf, until eighteen, and received a good common school education; he left home and located in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he learned the millwright trade. At the age of twenty-six he commenced traveling over different States, constructing and building mills. When twenty-seven he built a mill and located on Indian Creek, in Monroe Cunty, Ky. In 1859 he located on the farm where he now resides, of 165 acres, which he has had improved with a good residence, orchard, etc.; he also owns a farm in Barren County, of about 200 acres; also an interest in grist and saw-mill, and an interest in a mill at Gamaliel. In October, 1861, he enlisted in Company G, Ninth Kentucky Infantry; was always ready for duty, except a short period after the battle of Chickamauga, where he received two wounds in the back and hip. He served through the war and was mustered out of service with the regiment at Louisville as first lieutenant; was a brave and good soldier; never shrank from duty. After his return he engaged in the milling interests. He married, November 29, 1860, at Tompkinsville, Mary E. Taylor, of Monroe County, a daughter of Joseph P. and Martha J. (Howard) Taylor, who were born and reared in Barren and Monroe Counties, respectively. Her father is a saddler by trade and a son of John and Elizabeth (Pedigo) Taylor, of Kentucky. To Mr. and Mrs. Batdorf four children were born: Mollie E., a bright girl who died at the age of twenty-three; Minnie May, Effie Bell and Ada. Mr. Batdorf and wife are members of the Christian Church, have both been members of the Grange. Mr. Batdorf is a Republican; before the war he was a Whig.
