MITCHELL was born September 8, 1850, where he now resides, in the northeast part of Metcalfe County, near Sulphur Well. He is the second of five sons and two daughters, all of whom lived to be grown, born to James and Susannah W. (Davis) Mitchell. James Mitchell was born and raised in Adair, now Metcalfe County. He is a son of Col. Elzie Mitchell; in 1878 moved to Glasgow. Mrs. Susannah W. Mitchell was born and reared in Boyle County, Ky. Samuel W. was born and reared on a farm; received the rudiments of an English eduation in the common schools, after which he attended Bethel College fifteen months, also attended for ten months a military academy conducted by Gen. E. Kirby, Smith, at Newcastle. He married, September 15, 1875, Ophelia Biggerstaff, of Hart County, a native of Monroe and a daughter of Robert and Nancy (Williams) Biggerstaff, who were born and reared in Monroe County, Ky. In about 1878 Robert Biggerstaff moved to California, where he represented a patent wheat separator. In the spring of 1874 located near Fort Worth, Tex., at Aledo, where he is superintendent of a ranch. He was a strong Union man during the war. He is a son of Aaron Biggerstaff, who married Henrietta Stone, of Virginia, and who emigrated from Virginia to Kentucky at an early day; he was a farmer and a slave holder. To Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell were born four boys: Charles W., James W., Little W., and Henry W. Mrs. Mitchell is a member of the Reformed Church. Shortly after his marriage Mr Mitchell located where he now lives on his father's farm of 1,300 acres; he is making a speciality of breeding jacks and jennies; he has been constantly engaged in farming, except four years, in which he was engaged in the mercantile business at Horse Cave; he owns an interest in a section of land in Jackson Co, Tex. He is a member of the I. O. O. F. In politics a Democrat.
