Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Metcalfe County. JOHN S. DOWELL was born May 9, 1819, in Albemarle County, Va. He is the fourth of five boys and five girls born to Harrison and Nancy (Hall) Dowell. Harrison Dowell was born and reared in Virginia; immigrated to Green County (now Metcalfe), Ky., in 1820, where he engaged in farming. He was a soldier in the war of 1812. He was a son of John Dowell, of Virginia, who was a farmer, of Irish descent. Mrs. Nancy Dowell was born and reared in Albemarle County, Va. She was a daughter of John and Mary (Sandidge) Hall, who were born and reared in Virginia, and moved to Green County, Ky., about 1826. John Hall was a tailor by trade, and was a soldier in the Indian war, and also in 1812, serving in all about seven years. He was of English descent; his mother was a sister of John Quincy Adams. John S. Dowell came to Kentucky with his parents, and began life for himself on coming of age. He married, March 16, 1843, Elizabeth Keen, of Green County, and a daughter of John and Elizabeth (Hall) Keen, who were natives of Virginia, and came to Kentucky about 1825. They settled in Green County, where they farmed extensively. To Mr. and Mrs. Dowell four children wre born: Richard H., Robert W., Thomas W. and Sarah G. (deceased). Mrs. Dowell died July 27, 1863, a member of the Baptist Church. In January, 1864, Mr. Dowell married Elizabeth J., widow of William Harris, and daughter of William T. and Nancy (Scaggs) Mitchell, natives of Tennessee and Kentucky, respectively. To Mr. Dowell, by his second marriage, five children were born: La Fayette, John W., Eugene W., Queen Victoria and Nancy L. The parents are members of the Baptist Church. Mr. Dowell is a member of the Masonic faraternity. After his first marriage he located on Adams Creek for fifteen years. In 1874 he located where he now resides, on 263 acres, all in timber, which he has improved with good buildings; has since sold forty acres. In politics he is a Democrat, and cast his first presidential vote for Henry Clay.
