His father, John Bragg, was born in Green County, Ky., in 1808. In the year 18-- he married Rachel Mitchell, who died in 1854, and left eleven children. Her husband survived her about nine years. He was thirteen years of age when his father died, and from that time he began to make his own way in life. In the common schools he laid the basis of a fair English education, which he improved by much reading at home, and his contact with the affairs of life has brought out his business abilities. In 1874 he engaged in a general merchandising trade in Bridgeport, Metcalfe County; the business has grown and expanded until now, under the firm name of Bragg, Jeffries & Co., they have an extensive business which enables them to carry from $7,000 to $10,000 stock in trade. Mr. Bragg is unmarried. Besides his interest in the mercantile business, he is the proprietor of 150 acres of land, one-half of wich is in cultivation and improved with good fences, comfortable dwellings, barn, orchard, etc. In politics he is a Republican; he has no political aspirations for himself, but occasionally lends a willing and influential hand to the support of a friend. He is a member of the United Baptist Church. He has held the office of postmaster at East Fork for the last six years. Mr. Bragg is a generous and public-spirited gentleman who commands the confidence of all who know him.
