"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone. Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, pp. 427-428. Used by permission. [McLean] FREDERICK WILLIAM WITTENBRAKER: F. W. Wittenbraker has spent the vast majority of his ministerial life among the Churches of Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and Wyoming, yet, he entered the ministry in Kentucky and for a time served Churches in this Association. He was born at Evansville, Indiana, on June 15, 1868, and is the son of Simon and Mary Flora Wittenbraker. On November 20, 1889, he was converted under the preaching of Elder T. C. Carter and was baptized into the fellowship of the New Harmony Church, Webster County, Kentucky. The Church believed at once that he was called to preach. He led the first prayer meeting after the close of the revival and was licensed to preach on January 18, 1890, less than two months after his conversion. This same Church ordained him to the ministry on the Third Sunday in June, 1893, with Elders U. J. Fox, J. H. Spurlin, and T. C. Carter, serving as council. Our subject has served the following Churches since his ordination: Green River Mt. Liberty, Mt. Vernon, Glenvilie [sic], and Zion in Daviess County Association; Sinking Fork and West Mt. Zoar in Bethel Association; Harmony in Little River Association; Audubon at Henderson; Robards, Mt. Pleasant, Hebbardsville, and DeKoven in Ohio Valley Association, Novinger, Connellsville, Brownnington [sic], in Missouri; Dexter, Horton, Milton, and Seward Avenue at Topeka, all in Kansas; Nebraska City, Nebraska; and Lovell, Wyoming. His last pastorate was at Brownington, Missouri, where he retired on October 1, 1940, after a ministry of almost fifty years. He preached the annual sermon before the Daviess County Association in the year 1898 and in the years 1895-1896 was Chairman of the Temperance Committee of the Association. The present building at Mt. Liberty was completed in 1898 during his pastorate there. Charles F. Banning, L. L. Spurlin, Frank Farmer, and J. A. McChord were licensed to preach under his ministry. All but Charles F. Banning were also ordained under his ministry. For a number of years he served as a Colporter under the direction of District Associations and for a time under the direction of the American Baptist Publication Society. Brother Wittenbraker was united in marriage to Miss Mary Ann Lytle, daughter of J. F. and Minerva Jane Lytle, on March 22, 1898. She became the mother of their two sons, F. W. Jr. and Charles Eugene. They also partly reared a young orphan girl in the years 1902-1910. The illness of Mrs. Wittenbraker has necessitated the retirement of our brother from the active work of the ministry. Although the gifts of our brother were not large he has done a good piece of work as a minister of the Gospel and has tried to be faithful in his calling. There has never been any regret that he answered the call of the Lord as he realized that he was only a sinner saved by grace and that he could be used of the Lord.
