"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone, Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky. Used by permission. p. 277-278. McLean Co. FREDERICK TANNER: The subject of this sketch was born September 10, 1792, in Boone County, Kentucky, and united with the Beaver Dam Church in 1811, being baptized by Elder Benjamin Tolbert. He united with the Tanner's Meeting House Church (Buck Creek) in 1813. Buck Creek Church saw his services as clerk from about the year 1814 to 1824. He was licensed to preach by this church in September, 1824, and ordained in November, 1830. For many years his name is interwoven with the history of the church as messenger to the association, as clerk, and as pastor. His pastorate there was in 1840-1844. He always declined the offer of the pastorate unless they were unable to secure another. Besides Buck Creek he served the following churches as pastor: Macedonia, 1855-1858; Station, 1840-1843, 1855-1859; New Hope, 1838-1847; Mt. Carmel, 1851-1852, 1856-1859; Walton's Creek, 1842-1843. He also served the Association as missionary on numerous occasions. Most of this work was done without charge to the body. Frederick Tanner had a humble opinion of his abilities, yet, Dr. J. S. Coleman regarded him as a man of superior natural endowments, and, under favorable circumstances, an eloquent and powerful preacher. He maintained a spotless character and exerted an excellent influence over the people who knew him best. He died at his home at a ripe old age on August 16, 1868. His wife, Julia, preceded him in death by 7 years. They are both buried in the Buck Creek Cemetery one mile west of Nuckols, in McLean County, Kentucky.
