Used by permission. [McLean] ALFRED NELSON MORRIS: Alfred Nelson Morris was born in Kanawha County, West Virginia, on May 14, 1875, and is the son of John Silas and Mary Catherine (Campbell) Morris. He was born again on December 21, 1894, and was baptized into the fellowship of the Jordan Light Church in his native county by Rev. Preston S. Chandler. In his youth and young manhood he labored as a farmer, as a sawmill hand, as a lumberman, and for a time taught music. He attended the public schools in his native county and at St. Albans, W. Va., and also attended the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. For two years he was Professor of Bible in Norman Junior Baptist College. He was licensed to preach by his home Church on February 13 1897, and was ordained on June 22, 1899, by Revs. Jonathan Smith, J. W. Smith, N. B. Fitzwater, A. H. Bailey, P. S. Chandler, Mark Jarrett, and T. E. Melton. He has served as pastor of the Russell, Jackson, Fordsville, and Livermore Churches, all in Kentucky; Vienna, Doerun, Norman Park, and Jeffersonville, all in Georgia; First Guyandotte, Huntington, West Virginia. He also served the following one-half time Churches: Ansted, W. Va., Brinson, Donalsonville, Arlington, Hamilton, and Manchester First, all in Georgia. Mrs. Morris was the former Miss Virginia Belle Given. They were married on February 2, 1899. She died on February 22, 1940. She was a consecrated Christian woman and read her Bible through more than twenty-five times. She was a daughter of Amos Given, a descendent of Captain John Given of the Revolutionary War. They had six children, three sons and three daughters. Brother Morris is the author of "A Genealogy of the Morris Family," "The New Testament Church," "Foot-Washing," "The Lord's Supper," "Modern Holiness Examined," and "Holy Rollerism Examined". He has also made frequent contributions to many Baptist Papers. He served as President of the Baptist Pastors' Association, Huntington, West Virginia, one year and as Secretary-Treasurer two years. He is also a charter member of the West Virginia Baptist Historical Society. He has served as Moderator of Associations, preacher of annual, missionary, and doctrinal sermons, and has served in many other denominational offices. His ministry has been helpful, extensive, and inspiring.
