A History of Masonry in Madison County, Kentucky 1812-1913, compiled and written by Robert R. Burnam, 1914, p. 56. CHARLES J. WALKER was born in Madison County, Kentucky, June 22, 1799. He was the son of James Walker and Mary Estill. The latter was the niece of Captain James Estill, who was killed in the famous battle of Little Mountain (Mt. Sterling) in 1782 with the Wyandotte Indians. James Walker died when the subject of the sketch was a very young boy, and Charles' early life was not without hardships. He received his elementary education at the schools of his County. When fifteen years of age he went to St. Louis and lived for several years with an uncle, David Walker. Here he had the best advantages which that growing city could give and improved his opportunities. He later returned to Kentucky and graduated in medicine at Transylvania University. This medical school had enrolled among its teachers at that time such names as Dudley, Fishback, Warfield. Dr. Walker graduated with honors and returned to his native County to begin his life work. He formed a partnership with Dr. Rollins, which lasted until the latter removed to Missouri. Dr. Walker had all the graces of heart, mind and body which combined make an ideal family physician. He was sympathetic, gentle, with a rare sense of humor. He enjoyed for many years a splendid practice. The night was never too stormy nor the way too long for him when his services were sought. His great personal popularity was evidenced by the fact that he frequently represented his people in both branches of the legislature. In later life he retired from the active practice of his profession and lived on a beautiful farm, where his friends ever found a hospitable welcome. He married Miss Nancy Embry and the home life of this couple from all viewpoints was almost ideal. They left a large family. Dr. Walker died June 27, 1878. He was made a Mason in 1824. Was elected Master June, 1825, serving for one year only. Walker Estill Dudley Fishback Warfield Embry = MO http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygenweb/kybiog/madison/walker.cj.txt
