A History of Masonry in Madison County, Kentucky 1812-1913, compiled and written by Robert R. Burnam, 1914, p. 83. JOHN ANDREW HIGGINS was born in Lincoln County, Kentucky, January 10, 1843. He came from pioneer stock on both sides. He lived when a young man in Crescent, Minnesota, and was there made a Mason in Morning Star Lodge No. 25 in 1867. On coming to Richmond he demitted from Morning Star Lodge and affiliated with Richmond Lodge No. 25 October 10, 1871. Was made a Royal Arch Mason in Richmond Chapter February 16, 1875. Received the Council degrees, a part of the Chapter, February 15, 1881. Was created and constituted a Companion of the Illustrious Order of Red Cross March 6, 1876, dubbed and created a Knight of the Valiant and Magnanimous Order of Knights Templar March 9, 1876 in Richmond Commandery No. 19. Elected Master of Richmond Lodge December 27, 1876. Elected Eminent Commander of Richmond Commandery April 3, 1883. He has served his Lodge as Secretary for fifteen years and still holds that position. Has served as Secretary of his Chapter six years and still holds that position. He is Recorder of Richmond Commandery, having served sixteen years. Captain Higgins is and has been for many years authority in the various bodies. Polite, modest, true, he is deservedly popular, not alone with his brother Masons, but with all who know him. He is a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church and has served it as Deacon and Ruling Elder for more than thirty years. He married Miss Sue Ellis in l871, who with a daughter, Miss Julia, compose his family. Such a life lives and will live in the memory of his brethren.
