A History of Masonry in Madison County, Kentucky 1812-1913, compiled and written by Robert R. Burnam, 1914, p. 81. WILLIAM LETCHER CRUTCHER, the son of James Crutcher and Tabitha Phelps Williams, was born in Madison County, Kentucky, December 21, 1838. His father, James Crutcher, was in early life a cabinet maker and associated with John Lawrence and Samuel Ware, both of whom were Masters of Richmond Lodge. He was a splendid workman and a most estimable citizen in every way. He married in 1837 and with his bride moved to the country, becoming a successful farmer. His son, the subject of this sketch, is a worthy son of such a sire. He was educated at the public schools in his native County and at Bethany College, Virginia, during the presidency of Alexander Campbell. On returning from college he engaged in agricultural pursuits and has continued the life of a country gentleman except a few years while an officer in the Madison National Bank and deputy collector of internal revenue during the second Cleveland administration. He owns and lives today on the farm where he was born. He married early in life Miss Terry and their home has ever been one where a cordial welcome awaits their friends. He was initiated in Richmond Lodge October 26, l860, passed February 26, 1861, but did not receive the Master's degree until May 27, l865. He once said to the writer that no one could tell what would happen in war time, so he waited until the war was over. He was exalted to the august degree of a Royal Arch Mason in 1866. He was elected Master first December, 1867. Again in 1872, again in 1873 and a fourth time in December, 1890, serving in each instance a full year. Mr. Crutcher has the honor of having had the longest service as Master during the history of Richmond Lodge. He also bears the distinction (1914) of being not only the oldest Master, but the oldest member of our Lodge. At the Centennial Celebration in August, 1913, he read a most interesting paper which has been preserved. The hope and wish of all who know him is that he will be with us yet many years to help guide and direct the destiny of the craft.
