Kentucky: A History of the State, Perrin, Battle, Kniffin, 4th ed., 1887, Madison County. S. T. COBB was born March 17, 1832, five miles east of Richmond, and is a son of Zena and Provy (Tevis) Cobb, to whom four sons were born: Jesse (deceased), Harvey, John (deceased) and S. T. Zena Cobb was born in 1796 in Virginia; was brought to Kentucky by his parents when yet a small lad, and afterward became one of the leading farmers of Madison County, where he remained until his death, August 29, 1878. He was a son of Samuel and Nancy Cobb, who were born in Virginia, and came to Madison County, Ky., as early as 1805, and settled north of Richmond. They reared a family of three sons, Zena, Parker and Samuel, and four daughters, Matilda, Frances, Nancy and Elizabeth, all of whom lived to rear families. Mrs. Provy Cobb was a daughter of Nathaniel and Nancy (Burgin) Tevis, who were pioneers of Madison County. S. T. Cobb was reared on the home farm, and January 2, 1852, was united in marriage to Nancy Peyton, a daughter of Guffey and Elizabeth (Moore) Peyton, who were both born in Madison County in 1795. Guffey Peyton was a farmer and died in March, 1871; his wife in September, 1865. He was a son of Yelberton and Anna (Guffey) Peyton, natives of Virginia, who came to Madison County, Ky., as early as 1785 or 1791, and settled five miles south of Richmond, where they reared a family of four sons and five daughters. The Cobb and Peyton families were Whigs in politics. Mr. and Mrs. Cobb have five children: Zerilda Mitchell, Brutus W., Zena G., Amanda Terry and Durrett W. Mr. and Mrs. Cobb are members of the Christian Church. After their marriage they lived near where they were born until 1859, when they located where they now reside, five miles south of Richmond, on 125 acres, now increased to 370 acres. Mr. Cobb has devoted much time and attention to the raising of mules. He cast his first presidential vote for Filmore, in 1856, but since the war has been a Democrat.
