Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B Lawrence County H.S. SWETNAM, M.D., was born in Lawrence County, Ky., June 1, 1818, and is a son of Neri and Mildred (Cross) Swetnam, natives of Culpeper County, Va. Theelder Swetnam was born November 2, 1777, was of English descent, came to Kentucky in 1818, and died January 7, 1862. H.S. Swetnam was reared on the home farm, which place he left at the age of twenty-one, and for two years engaged in teaming and chopping wood; the four years following he again employed himself on the farm, after which he went to Morgan County and taught school. In 1850 he began the study of medicine under Dr. Joseph D. Williams, of Bath County, with whom he remained three years before attempting to practice. In 1859 he entered Ohio Medical College, from which he graduated in 1860, having, however, previously practiced in Bath and Johnson Counties. After graduation he returned to Johnson County and practiced until 1865, when he removed to Louisa, Lawrence County, where he has ever since been engaged actively in his profession. January 19, 1848, he married Miss Mary J. Williams, a native of Scott County, Va., and to this union seven children have been born. Of these, John Willis and William B. are practicing physicians; John Willis was born February 23, 1851, and is residing at Peach Orchard, Lawrence County, Ky; William B. is in Morris County, Kan., and was born October 4, 1863; the remaining living child is Victoria R. Dr. H.S. Swetnam is the owner of 308 acres of good land in Lawrence County, a large tract in Johnson County, and a number of lots in Louisa. He is an Odd Fellow and has been an elder and preacher in the Methodist Protestant Church for forty years. He is a Republican in politics, and during the war was assistant surgeon of the Thirty-ninth Kentucky Mounted Infantry.
