Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, Laurel County Nathaniel M. Scales, a practicing physician of London, Laurel County, KY, was born in Henry County, VA, February 23, 1838. His parents, Nathaniel and Jane (Hay) Scales, also natives of Henry County, VA, had ten children, viz: Joseph, Nancy E., Ellen, Harriet, Nathaniel M., Peter H. and four infants, of whom our subject is the only survivor. Nathaniel Scales, father of our subject, was born in 1800, and followed farming all his life. Jane Scales was a daughter of Peter and Lodosca Hay. Nathaniel M. Scales was reared and educated in his native county, where he was engaged in agricultural pursuits until 1856, when he commenced the study of medicine with Dr. R.D. Hay and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1860. He then practiced his profession until the out break of the war, when he enlisted in the Confederate army, Company B, First North Carolina State troops, and was soon afterward promoted to surgeon, serving in that capacity until the close of war. He then resumed the practice of medicine in Virginia, remaining there until 1869, when he moved to Laurel County, KY where he has since been actively engaged in the practice of his chosen profession. September 21, 1870, he married Alvana Magee, a daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Cotengin) Magee, of Laurel County. They have six children, viz: Mattie, Austin F., Lucy, Cora, Henry and Fannie. Politically Mr. Scales is a Democrat. He is a member of the F. & A.M. fraternity, and also of the Baptist Church.
