Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1885, Larue Co. REV. FRANCIS S. CESSNA was born May 12, 1835, in Hodgensville, Ky. He is the second of two sons and three daughters born to Jonathan F. and Nancy (Miller) Cessna, both of La Rue [sic] County. Jonathan Cessna was born November 16, 1804; was a farmer and owner of slaves; served as sheriff, also judge of his county for twelve years, and also practiced law to some extent. He was one of the prominent and active citizens of the county; was a leading member of the Baptist Church; also of the Masonic fraternity, and died May 19, 1885. He was a son of William Cessna, who married a Miss Wallace, and came from Pennsylvania when a child of four years with his father, who first landed at Louisville, and shortly after settled on Nolin, and was one of the very early settlers in La Rue County, then Hardin. He was of French descent, his wife coming from Scotland with her parents and settling in La Rue County. William Cessna was the first representative of La Rue County. The mother of Rev. F. S. Cessna was born August 25, 1813, and was a daughter of Abraham and Mary (Johnson) Miller, her father being one of the early pioneers of La Rue County. Rev. F. S. Cessna was reared on a farm; received a good common English education, and had about eight years' experience in teaching. May 25, 1858, he married Sarah E. Hays, a daughter of E. R. and Margaret (Ashcraft) Hays, and to this union have been born three children: Nannie T. (Miller), Frank L., and Allie M. After his marriage Mr. Cessna taught for several years. June 27, 1861, he was ordained to preach in the Baptist Church, and has been regularly engaged in the ministry ever since. For a short time he engaged in the drug business. The Presbytery that ordained Mr. Cessna in connection with the church was composed of the following ministers: John Duncan, John Miller, M. H. Huber, W. L. Morris, J. T. Miller, W. H. Williams, R. M. Enlows, and A. F. Baker. Rev. Cessna has lived in La Rue County all his life, except two years in Louisville. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity; was at one time a member of the I. O. O. F., and in politics is a Democrat. His great-grandfather, Cessna, was killed by the Indians where Louisville now stands.
