Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th ed., 1887, Kenton Co. DR. JOHN H. STEVENSON, deceased, a native of Bourbon County, Ky., was born January 10, 1810. His father having died before the birth of John H., the latter was reared on a farm by his uncle, Hawkins Jones. He received a common-school education, and when quite young commenced the study of medicine, and graduated from the Lexington Medical College. He practiced his profession in Bourbon County a few years, moved to Florence, Boone County, in 1835, where he remained many years in successful practice. About 1855 he moved to what is now Erlanger, Kenton Co., Ky., where he died December 12, 1883, and was for many years recognized as one of the leading physicians of both Boone and Kenton Counties. In May, 1838, he married Alice E. Timberlake, daughter of Thornton and Sophia (Berry) Timberlake, natives of Virginia, and the former an officer in the war of 1812. Eight children blessed this union--four daughters and four sons--viz: William T., Sophia B., Margaret E., Annie, James, Mary A., Thomas J. and an infant. Thomas J., the only surviving son, and youngest in the family, resides on the old homestead at Erlanger with his mother, and is engaged in the leaf tobacco business. The Doctor's paternal grandparents immigrated to this country, at an early date in its history, from Ireland, and were of Scotch-Irish origin. The family was characterized by all the energy that belongs to the Scotch character. The Doctor's father was the youngest of a family of four brothers and one sister. His brother's names were Thomas J., William and James, and sister's name was Permelia. The family were endowed with strong minds and a love of literature. His father was a lawyer by profession, and died in South Carolina while on a tour of professional business. His mother's name was Jones, a member of one of the oldest and most respectable families in Bourbon County, Ky. He studied medicine at Lexington in the days of Dr. Benjamin F. Dudley, and began practice in his native county, but soon settled in Boone County. As a practitioner he was eminently successful. He had a strong mind, was well learned in his profession, added to an intense devotion to his work, making him most highly acceptable to the people as a physician. For about twenty years of his life twenty hours a day were spent in professional duties. His eldest son, William T., was a merchant of Cincinnati, of high standing, and died a few months before his father, in the forty-fourth year of his age, leaving a widow, Margaret L. (Manly) Stevenson, and four children. The Doctor's eldest daughter, Margaret E., is the wife of Theo. F. Hallam, of Covington, a prominent lawyer of that city. Mary A. and Thomas J. Stevenson are unmarried, the other four of his children died young.
