Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th ed., 1887, Kenton Co. CALEB RICE was born on the farm where he now resides, August 14, 1805, and was a son of Benjamin and Betsey (Tinsley) Rice. Benjamin Rice was born in Madison County, Va. He was brought up in Virginia, where he lived until after he was married, about 1781. A short time after he moved to Kentucky, settling first in Woodford County, and about 1790 settled on the tract of land now owned by Caleb Rice. He reared a family of nine children--six sons and three daughters. Caleb Rice is now the only surviving member of this family. He was brought up on the farm, and received his education in the common schools. He has followed farming and stock dealing all his life, and is now regarded as one of Kenton County's most substantial farmers. At one time he owned upward of 700 acres of land, but has divided the same among his children, and now owns 185 acres of valuable land. He built his present residence, a beautiful two-story brick, in 1848. November 19, 1826, he married Mary House, a daughter of Jacob and Susan (Tanner) House, of Ohio, but natives of Virginia. To this union six children have been born--three sons and three daughters--Jacob, Thomas, Mary, WIlliam H., Caroline and Julia A. Mr. Rice is a Republican in politics.
