WILLIAM O'REILLY, superintendent of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company of New York, is a native of Dublin, Ireland, was born January 23, 1849, and is a son of William and Marcella (Sury) O'Reilly. Mr. O'Reilly was well educated for business pursuits. June 21, 1877, he landed at New York City. He then went to Philadelphia, Penn., to accept the assistant superintendency of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, remained eleven months, then became superintendent, and went to Reddington, Penn., and remained twelve months, when in 1880 he came to Covington, Ky., where he still retains the position of superintendent. The assets of the company are $4,000,000; total amount paid to beneficiaries $11,000,000; has a membership of more than 1,000,000. The home office is at the corner of Park Place and Church Street, New York, with branch offices in all principal cities. The office in Covington is at No. 7, Boone's Block. January 3, 1873, Mr. O'Reilly was united in marriage to Rose McKerney, of Liverpool, England. Two children blessed this union: Delia and Margaret. Mrs. O'Reilly died June 21, 1886, a member of the Catholic Church. November 25, 1886, Mr. O'Reilly married Mrs. M. J. Garrett, daughter of Charles Begwell. He has been a member of the city council for two years, and is industrious, active and energetic in whatever he engages in, is a gentleman of pleasing manners, and is quite popular with all who know him.
