Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th ed., 1887, Kenton Co. M. LEVIS was born in Covington, Ky., September 25, 1839, and is a son of John T. and Harriet (Whitehead) Levis. John T. Levis was born in Delaware County, Penn., came to Kentucky in 1828, and settled in Covington, where he owned and managed the Covington Cotton Mills for several years, and was also president of the Kentucky Central Railroad for some time; he built the bridge across the Licking River, and was general manager of the Picking Rolling Mills. He was a son of Samuel Levis, a native of Pennsylvania. They are descendants of the French Huguenots. Mrs. Harriet Levis was a daughter of William Whitehead, a native of England. M. Levis received a good education, and in 1875 located in Wheeling, W. Va., where he was secretary and manager of the Norway Iron Manufacturing Company for four years. He then removed to Covington, and started the Enterprise Iron Works, with which he was connected two years, and in 1882 he opened a real estate and loan office in Covington, in which business he is still engaged.
