JOHN E. HAMILTON was born August 1, 1838, and is a son of Robert and
Martha Hamilton nee Boyes, natives of Ireland and Scotland, 
respectively.  His father died when our subject was about one year old, 
and he went with his mother to New Castle, Ky.  Hie mother died several 
years ago.  He was educated in the grammar school of Columbia College, 
New York City, and graduated at Kenyon College, Ohio, in 1856.  He read
law with Mengies & Pryor at Covington, where he moved and has resided 
since 1858; he graduated at Cincinnati Law School in 1869 or 1860.  In 
1876 he was appointed by President Grant district attorney for Kentucky,
but before assuming the duties, he was appointed by Chief Justice Waite,
on the recommendation of Hon. Bland Ballard, district judge of Kentucky,
register in bankruptcy, which office he filed with great honor to 
himself, and acceptability to the court, bar, and the people.  Mr. 
Hamilton is and has been a practicing attorney at Covington bar since 
1860, and was partner of Speaker Carlisle for years, and since 1879 he 
has been, and is now the partner of Judge W. W. Cleary.  He is a 
Republican in politics, has been at different times, for over eight 
years, a member of the Republican State Central Committee, was for a 
short time chairman, and was lately appointed again on this committee; 
has been many times on the city and county committees and managed the 
elections, in his county, always giving liberally to his party; was a 
delegate to the National Republican Convention held at Chicago in 1880.
He was offered, in 1881, by President Garfield, the solicitorship of 
the treasury, which he declined.  He was director in the Farmers' Band 
of Kentucky for several years, and is now one of the trustees of 
Covington.  Mr. Hamilton was married, in 1861, to Miss Winston, 
daughter of J. P. Winston, wholesale dry goods merchant of Cincinnati, 
Ohio.  Two children have been born to this union: J. E. and E. C.
