Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th ed., 1887, Kenton Co. H. J. GAUSEPOHL, attorney at law and notary public, No. 36 West Sixth Street, Covington, Ky., was born in Covington, December 20, 1845, and is the eldest of eight children born to J. B. and Mary J. (Hugenberg) Gausepohl. J. B. Gausepohl was born in the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg, Germany, June 21, 1816, and immigrated to the New World in 1835, settling first in Baltimore. Soon afterward he removed to Ohio, where he remained about five years, moving to Covington, Ky., in 1841. In 1869 he made another removal, settling this time in Richmond, Ind., where he still resides. His business during life has been contracting and building, which he has carried on, on a large scale. J. P. Gausepohl's father, who died in Germany, was named Bernard Gausepohl. Mrs. Mary J. Gausepohl was born in Germany, and was the daughter of H. Hugenberg. H. J. Gausepohl was educated in Covington, and at St. Xavier's College, Cincinnati. During the first three years of his life after graduation, he was a drug clerk, but during the late war was clerk in the provost-marshal's office, of Covington, one and one-half years. In 1865 he opened a hat store in Covington, which he continued until 1869. This was his first commercial venture on his own account, was a success, and in 1869 he opened another hat store, which he ran successfully until 1883; but while engaged in the enterprise found time to read law and attend the Cincinnati Law School two years--from 1879-1881. After graduating in May, 1881, he entered into the practice of law, having been admitted to the Covington bar, January 8, 1881, and since 1883 has devoted his entire time to his profession. He is a stockholder in the Farmers' and Traders' Bank, and is the attorney for three building associations, the Germania, Columbia and Grand Central. He was married, November 6, 1872, to Miss Josephine Bohmman, of Germany, daughter of Joseph and Mary C. (Kroger) Bohmman, and of the children born to this union, Flora, Charles, Clara and May are living. Mr. Gausepohl has always voted the Democratic ticket. In 1884, three years ago, he was appointed, by the Kenton County Court, the public administrator and guardian for Kenton County, which office he still holds.
