Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th ed., 1887, Kenton Co. DR. H. de GRUYTER, a native of Moers, Germany, was born September 27, 1843, and is a son of John F. and Louisa (Venhorst) de Gruyter, natives of Holland. He was educated at the best schools, graduated in medicine at the University of Bruxelles, Belgium, in 1865, and immediately after graduating came to the United States; he landed at New York City in 1865, and remained there a few months as a drug clerk. He then went to Charleston, W. Va., where he engaged in the practice of his profession two years, and was successful. In 1867 he went into Covington, Ky., and clerked in a drug for one year. He then went into the drug business on his own account, establishing two stores, which he operated successfully. He is now the Kentucky editor for the Cincinnati Volksfreund, and proprietor and manager of a prominent job printing office in Covington. In 1878 he was elected coroner of Covington, and re-elected in 1882. He was united in marriage to Cythiana Crockett, of Franklin County, Ky., in 1866, daughter of John B. Crockett. One child blessed this union, Otto, who is engaged in his father's printing office. Mrs. de Gruyter died in 1884, and in May, 1884, the Doctor married Paulina Neuber, of Covington, daughter of August Neuber; three children have been born to their union: Louisa, Selma and Patrick Charles T.
