Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th ed., Kenton Co. H. F. BOWEN was born in Bracken County, Ky., in 1822. His father was Alexander Bowen, of Virginia, who settled in Bracken County, Ky., in 1809, where he engaged in farming; he married Miss French, of Virginia, who bore him thirteen children, our subject being the ninth child. The paternal grandfather of our subject, a farmer, was a native of Virginia, where he died. H. F. Bowen settled in Kenton County with his father, in 1825, where he was educated in the common schools. He has always been a mechanic and carpenter; was city assessor for six years, and sheriff of the county from 1863 to 1867; he has also been school trustee and councilman for a number of years. In 1845 he married Margaret Hathaway, daughter of John Hathaway, a farmer of Kenton County. Nine children were born to his union, of whom four are deceased; the surviving members are William H. H., who married Annie Evans, of Kenton County, and has two children; Woodford H., who married Abbie Shinkle, and has two children; Harriet G., wife of Ivor Evans, of Kenton County, and has three children; Edward F., and Laura B.
