Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Jessamine Co. DR. JAMES H. WILLIS, third son of William T. and Hettie E. (Howe) Willis, was born in Greensburg, Green County, January 26, 1823. William T. Willis was born in Culpeper County, Va., in 1794, and at an early day was brought to Kentucky by his parents, who settled in Adair County. He practiced law in Adair, Hart, Barren, Green, Casey and Cumberland Countues until 1839, and them moved to Harrodsburg and practiced in Mercer, Marion, Boyle, Lincoln and Jessamine Counties until 1846, when he enlisted for the Mexican war, was killed at Beuna Vista February 23, 1847, and his remains lie buried at Frankfort, Ky. He was a strict member of the Presbyterian Church. The Doctor's grandfather, Edmond Willis, was also a native of Culpeper County, Va.; was owner of a large farm, and extensively engaged in raising stock, tocacco and fruit. His maternal grandfather, John Howe, was born in Scotland, and was one of the earliest settlers of, and most distinguished Presbyterian ministers that ever came to the United States. He married a Miss Margaret Wallace. James H. Willis received his early education at the select schools of Green County, under his grandfather and others. The Doctor is an Odd Fellow, and, with his daughter, a member of the Presybterian Church. J. H. Willis is the father of three living children--two sons and one daughter. The daughter is the wife of Ben Selby, Jr. He received his medical education under the tuition of Jackson, Smith and Dunlap at Danville, Ky., and at the Transylvania Medical School at Lexington, Ky., in 1843-44.
