MELVIN L. SMITH was born January 26, 1850, the only child of Richard J.
and Mary J. (Howser) Smith.  Richard Smith was born in Jessamine County
November 1, 1825, and died November 21, 1884.  Mary J. Smith was born in
this county and is still living.  Andrew Smith, M. L. Smith's grandfather,
was born in Fayette County, Ky., August 15, 1797, and came to Jessamine
County with his parents when a child.  He died December 20, 1877.  The
maternal grandfather, Peter Howser, born in Jessamine County, Ky., was a
farmer all his life.  Melvin L. Smith was reared on a farm, in this native
county of Jessamine; has always followed that occupation and also raises
stock.  He was married, November 20, 1873, to Miss Bettie McIntire of
Mercer County, Ky., daughter of George and Ellen (Grant) McIntire.  Mrs.
Ellen McIntire died April 9, 1872.  Mr. McIntire is still living.  One
child has blessed this union--Maggie B., born July 27, 1875. Mr. Smith and
wife belong to the Christian Church at Nicholasville; he owns seventy-five
acres of land in Lee District.
