Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Jessamine Co. DR. NEWTON SAGESER was born May 9, 1844, the sixth son of Jefferson and Nancy (Wallace) Sageser. Jefferson Sageser was born in Jessamine County September 17, 1812, farmed all his life in this county, and died March 6, 1876, a member of the Methodist Church South. Nancy Sageser was born in Madison County, Ky., January 21, 1814, and died July 4, 1881. The Doctor's paternal grandfather, Fredrick Sageser, was born in Pennsylvania, came to this county and settled in quite an early day. He was a distiller, a miller, a farmer, and died in Jessamine County. His maternal grandfather, James Wallace, was born in Virginia, settled in Madison County, Ky., in an early day, and always followed farming. Dr. Sageser was reared on a farm in his native county of Jessamine; in 1867 he commenced to read medicine, attended two full courses of lectures at the Kentucky School of Medicine at Louisville, Ky., and graduated in February, 1869. He practiced seven years in Jessamine, Garrard, Mercer and Fayette Counties, but on account of his ill health he abandoned the practice and went to farming and stock raising. The Doctor is a well read physician and did a good practice. He was married, June 15, 1869, to Martha Mays, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Foster) Mays. William Mays was born in Virginia January 1, 1795, was a farmer all his life, and died July 22, 1874. Mrs. Mays was born in this county in July, 1814, and is still living. Three children have blessed the union of Dr. and Mrs. Sageser, two living, viz: Flora C. and Sam. Dr. Sageser and wife are members of the Methodist Church South; he owns eighty-two and one half acres of land in Lee District, three miles west of Nicholasville, Ky.
