Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Jessamine Co. ALEXANDER C. MILES, a native of Marion County, Mo., was born July 1, 1850, and is the eldest living son of Franklin and Mary Jane (Welch) Miles, natives of Jessamine County. His paternal grandfather was William Miles; his maternal grandfather Nathaniel Welch, who probably came from Virginia. Franklin Miles was born in 1817. Alexander C. was born in Marion County, Mo.; when quite an infant was brought back to Jessamine County, and was reared on the home farm. He attended the seminary at Lawrenceburg, and in 1870 began teaching, which he followed nine years. From 1880 to 1883 he sold goods in Nicholasville as a clerk. In the fall of 1883 he was appointed school commissioner; in 1884 was elected two years, and in August 1886, was elected for four years. He was married, May 15, 1879, to Mary W. Lillard, of Anderson County, Ky., who has borne him three children: Fannie M., Lillard and Helen. Mr. Miles owns a small farm near Nicholasville; has always been a far-sighted and thrifty manager of his affairs, and is very popular in his community.
