Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Jessamine Co. WILLIAM C. LOWRY was born January 15, 1821, the fourth son of Melvin and Phoebe (Hiter) Lowry. Melvin Lowry was born in Virginia, came to Kentucky with his parents when quite young, was a farmer all his life, and died in 1842. Phoebe (Hiter) Lowry was born in Woodford County, Ky., and died in 1844. William C. Lowry was reared on a farm and has always farmed. He operated a grist and saw mill, located on Jessamine Creek, from 1861 to 1870, but was engaged in farming in the meantime. He was married, August 24, 1848, to Miss Nancy E. Neal, of Jessamine County, daughter of Elijah and Mary (Knight) Neal, both born in Virginia and both deceased. One child blessed this union, Nancy E., who died at the age of fourteen years. Mr. Lowry's wife died in July, 1851, and was a member of the Baptist Church. Mr. Lowry is a member of the Presbyterian Church, also of the I.O.O.F.; he owns 900 acres of land in the Lee District, six miles southwest of Nicholasville, on the Pleasant Hill Turnpike, where he is engaged in stock raising and farming.
