JACKSON was born in Winchester, Clark Co., Ky., January 22, 1842, and is the fifth son of Samuel G. and Ann S. (Mason) Jackson. Samuel Jackson was born in Madison COunty, Ky., in 1800. He owned and managed the first hardware store that was ever in Lexington, Ky. He once owned and ran successfully for years the Red River Iron Works in Estill County, Ky., and was at one time extensively engaged in pork packing at Louisville, the style of the firm being Jackson, Hull & Co. He also once engaged extensively in buying mules, feeding them until the markets suited him, and then shipping them South. He was a member of the Christian Church and died in 1853. Mrs. Ann S. Jackson was born in Montgomery County, Ky., and died in 1884. James Jackson was the paternal grandfather of Lewis M. Jackson. A ferry on the Kentucky River in Madison County is name Jackson in honor of him. Lewis M. Jackson, with his parents, when he was four years old, moved to Lexington, where his father died; lived there nine years, then moved to Frankfort. Lewis M. then moved to Boyle County, in 1871 to Woodford County, and then to Jessamine County. He farmed up to 1876, when he was elected sheriff by the Democratic party, and served two terms. He then farmed until 1883, when he bought the glass-mill on Jessamine Creek, Jessamine County. He was married, May 20, 1864, to Miss Jane, daughter of Dr. Peter and Sarah (Carpenter) Mason, of Boyle County. Dr. Peter Mason was born in Montgomery County, Ky., was a farmer, but read medicine and graduated at the Transylvania University. He did not like the profession and did not follow it. He died in 1870. Mrs. Sarah Mason was born in Lincoln County, Ky., at Carpenter's Station. Her father, George Carpenter, was one of the earliest settlers in Lincoln County, Ky. To Mr. and Mrs. Lewis M. Jackson have been born five children, one living, Bettie, fourteen years old. The parents are members of the Christian Church. One of Mr. Jackson's sisters (Bettie) is married to J. B. Huston, a prominent lawyer of Lexington, and another sister (Carrie) is married to ex-Gov. Crittenden of Missouri.
