Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Jessamine Co. HUGH CHRISMAN HEMPHILL, fifth son of Andrew and Mildred (Tapp) Hemphill, was born August 24, 1842. His parents were born in County Tyrone, Ireland, and Virginia respectively, the mother of English origin. His father came from Ireland in 1818, and about three years later came to Jessamine County, Ky., where he was engaged in farming and school teaching until 1842, and has held several important official positions, being magistrate for several years and was deputy clerk under John A. Willis. His death occurred in 1865. Hugh was reared on the farm, and received an academical course at Bethel Academy, Nicholasville. In December, 1873, he married Miss Ella Oxley, of Cynthiana, Ky., and from this union are Andrew, Mildred and Katie. He has a farm of 115 acres; during the war his sympathies were with the South; he is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
