DAVIS CARTER was born December 19, 1850, and is the seventh son of Lewis
and Emily (Hunter) Carter.  Lewis Carter was born in Virginia March 15,
1804, and came to Jessamine County, Ky., when a small boy with his
parents.  He was a farmer, and died June 30, 1880.  Mrs. Emily Carter 
was born in Jessamine County in 1817, and died April 23, 1854.  Davis 
Carter's paternal grandfather, Charles J. Carter, was born in Virginia, 
and died in Jessamine County, Ky., in his eighty-sixth year.  Davis 
Carter was born six and one-half miles south of Nicholasville, Ky., and 
farmed up to 1872.  He then went into the goods business two miles east 
of Sulphur Well, on Big Hickman Creek, kept a general store, and was in 
the business about a year.  Soon after he quit business he went to 
Lexington and clerked in a grocery store for Jacob David.  Tiring of 
clerking he returned to the farm.  November 21, 1878, he was married to 
Lelah J. Fain, daughter of Mitchell and Mary (Bussing) Fain, the former 
born eight miles east of Nicholasville September 1, 1837; the later was 
born in Garrard County, Ky., March 5, 1838, and both are still living.  
Three children have blessed this union: Marvin W., Vane H. and Grover 
Cleveland.  Mr. and Mrs. Carter are members of the Methodist Church.  
Mr. Carter is a Master Mason, and belongs to Ion Lodge, No. 301.  He 
owns ninety-seven acres of land in Sulphur Well District, six and 
one-half miles south of Nicholasville, on Watt's Mill and Sugar Creek 
Turnpike.
