JOSEPH H. BRYAN, is a son of Joseph Bryan and Margaret (Cartmell) Bryan,
and was born May 29, 1836; was educated at Bethany, Va., and graduated
in 1856.  He then engaged in farming, stock raising, etc., and is still
engaged in the same business.  He married, January 5, 1858, Mary Gist,
daughter of WIlliam and Mary (Brinker) Gist, of Kentucky.  Eleven [sic]
children have blessed this union: William, Joseph, Margaret, Mary,
Martha (Mrs. Elliott Shanklin), George, Robert, John, Daniel, Volney,
Catherine, Wade H. (deceased).  Mr. J. H. Bryan is a member of the 
Christian Church.
