BROOKS was born in Pittsylvania County, Va., and is the oldest son of Thomas and Nancy (Covington) Brooks. Thomas Brooks was born in Caswell County, N. C., farmed until 1860, but, owing to the interruption of mails by the war, has not been heard from since. Nancy Brooks was born in Pittsylvania County, Va. John A. Brooks moved from Virginia to Garrard County, Ky., in 1841, remained there four years, then to Madison one year, to Fayette and remained one year, then purchased the farm of 280 acres where he now resides, situated twelve and one-quarter miles south of Nicholasville. He was married, July 30, 1843, to Elizabeth Stanley, of Virginia, daughter of L. W. and Tabitha (Walters) Stanley. Mr. and Mrs. Brooks had had eleven children born to them, ten of whom are living: Newton, Pocahontas (married to B. E. Covington), Herrard, Fayette, Clinton, Delia (married to William S. Scott), Nellie (married to J. L. Adams), Victoria (married to J. H. Easley), Ora and John B. Mr. Brooks has a fine peach and apple orchard. He is a Royal Arch Mason; his Blue Lodge membership is Ion Lodge, No. 301.
