Lawyers and Lawmakers of Kentucky, by H. Levin, editor, 1897. Published by Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago. Reprinted by Southern Historical Press. p. 257. Jefferson County. FRANK WILLIAM MORANCY, of Louisville, was born in Madison parish, Louisiana, August 1, 1858. His father, Francis E. Morancy, was a highly educated man, a graduate in both law and medicine, yet his active business life was spent as a cotton planter. He was of French lineage, descended from ancestry who settled originally at San Domingo. The grandfather of our subject was a child of nine years at the time of the insurrection in San Domingo, in which nearly all the members of his family were killed. He escaped from the island to the United States, where he was reared, and afterward took up his residence in Mississippi. There he made his home until after the birth of Francis E. Morancy. Removing thence to Louisiana he became one of the extensive planters of that state. The mother of the subject of this sketch bore the maiden name of Bettie White and was a native of Woodford county, Kentucky. Her father was Zachariah White, of Hanover county, Virginia, who in his youth came to Kentucky with his father. One of his brothers, Joseph White, was United States senator from Florida and minister to France. Another brother, Philip S. White, as a lawyer and lecturer of note in Virginia. Frank William Morancy acquired his early education in the district and private schools of Woodford county, Kentucky, and afterward entered the St. Louis University, at St. Louis, Missouri. He was graduated in the law department of the University of Virginia with the degree of LL.B. in June, 1882, and was honored with the office of judge of the moot court of his class. In October of the same year he was admitted to the bar at Versailles, Kentucky, and entered upon the practice of his profession at that place. He served as city attorney for two terms and in August, 1885, removed to Louisville. In 1892 he became associated with Hon. Charles S. Grubbs, formerly of Logan county, Kentucky, and this partnership is still maintained, the firm receiving a liberal patronage and ranking among the able lawyers of the city, principally connected with chancery proceedings and insurance litigation. His political support is given the Democracy. He is a close student, methodical and accurate in the preparation of his cases, a pleasant speaker, forcible and clear in judgment.
