Lawyers and Lawmakers of Kentucky, by H. Levin, editor, 1897. Published by Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago. Reprinted by Southern Historical Press. p. 225. Jefferson County. SAMUEL B. KIRBY, of Louisville, is a native of Brunswick county, Virginia, born on the 9th of March, 1859, and is of Scotch-Irish and English lineage. His father also was born in Brunswick county, but his mother was a native of Maryland. The former served during the civil war as a soldier of the Confederacy, and at its close located in Louisville. Samuel B. Kirby attended the city schools of Louisville, and began the study of law in the office of Judge Emmet Fields, of the common-pleas division of the Jefferson circuit court. He was graduated at the Louisville Law School in 1880, and thereupon began the practice of his chosen profession, which he continued alone for thirteen years, meeting with excellent success in his undertakings and winning a reputation that entitles him to a place among the foremost lawyers of the city. In November, 1892, he entered into partnership with George Weissinger Smith, under the firm name of Kirby & Smith, which connection was dissolved in November, 1894. He has since been alone and now enjoys a distinctively representative clientage. As a general practitioner he pursues his profession in all its branches, and his legal learning, his strong mentality, his careful preparation and his powers as an orator have made him one of the leading members of the profession. In his political views Mr. Kirby is a stalwart Democrat, and takes an active interest in party affairs. Socially he is connected with the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and with the Knights of the Ancient Essenic Order. In manner he is rather reserved, and is entirely free from ostentation, is affable and courteous, and has earned and retains the respect of his fellow-members of the bar and of all whom he meets.
