WILLIAM WALLACE HARNEY, The son of native Kentucky parents, was born June 20, 1832, at Bloomington, Indiana, where his father, the late John Hopkins Harney (for 24 years, 1844-68, the able and distinguished editor of the Louisville Daily Democrat), then resided as professor of mathematics in the Indiana University. When five years old, his father removed to Louisville, where William was educated, with the finest advantages to be obtained; he taught school there, for some years; was for two years principal of the High Schooo; then professor in the State Normal School at Lexington, during the two years of its existence; studied law, and practiced in Louisville; became one of the editors of the Louisville Democrat. His occasional contributions of poetry to the journals of the day attracted much attention, and were regarded by the best judges as possessed of high merit.
