Reprinted in Kentucky Explorer, Volume 10, Number 7 - January, 1996. p. 103. Jefferson County. William Darke was born in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, in 1736. In 1740 his parents moved to Virginia. He was with Virginia troops at Braddock's defeat in 1755, and a Captain at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. He was taken prisoner at Germantown and released, and was Colonel commanding at the surrender of Cornwallis. He, in 1791, commanded the left wing of St. Clair's army at the defeat of the Miami Indians. In the bayonet charge there, his son, Capt. Joseph Darke, was killed.
